Ortho-K in Phoenix: Clear Vision Without Daytime Glasses
Ortho-K is a custom rigid lens worn only during sleep. It gently reshapes the front surface of the cornea overnight, so vision stays clear through the following day without glasses or daytime contact lenses. The effect is temporary and fully reversible.
Ortho-K solves a problem that glasses and daytime contact lenses do not. Swimmers, wrestlers, dusty job sites, long shifts in air conditioning, children who lose a pair of glasses a term: in all of these the correction is the inconvenience. Ortho-K moves the correction to the one part of the day when nothing else is happening.
The lens is rigid and gas permeable, made to a design generated from a map of your own cornea. Worn through the night, it applies gentle, evenly distributed pressure that redistributes the surface cells of the cornea into a flatter profile. Take the lens out in the morning and the cornea holds that new shape for roughly a day. Stop wearing the lenses and the cornea returns to exactly where it started, usually within a week or two.

What Is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K, short for orthokeratology, is a custom rigid gas permeable lens worn only during sleep. Overnight it reshapes the front surface of the cornea so light focuses correctly, giving clear daytime vision without glasses or contact lenses.
How Ortho-K Works
An Ortho-K lens uses a reverse geometry design. Its centre is flatter than the cornea and a steeper zone behind it creates gentle hydraulic forces in the tear film, redistributing surface corneal cells from the centre towards the mid periphery overnight.
Ortho-K for Myopia Control
Beyond correcting vision, Ortho-K changes how light focuses in the periphery of the retina. That peripheral defocus signal is understood to slow the axial elongation of the eye that drives worsening myopia in children.
Ortho-K for Children and Teens
Overnight lenses suit children particularly well because wear happens at home under a parent's eye, there is nothing to lose or break at school, and the same lens that clears vision also addresses the progression driving the prescription upward.

Corneal Refractive Therapy is a specific FDA approved overnight lens design within orthokeratology. Worn during sleep, it reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, with the effect typically lasting around 24 hours per night of wear.
Am I a Candidate for Ortho-K?
Good candidates are generally nearsighted up to about six dioptres with astigmatism under roughly one and a half, with healthy corneas and a stable nightly routine. Candidacy is decided from a corneal topography map, not from your glasses prescription.
The Ortho-K Fitting Process
Fitting runs from a 60 to 90 minute candidacy assessment, through diagnostic lens evaluation, to custom manufacture taking one to two weeks. Most people complete the process across two to three appointments over two to four weeks.
Ortho-K Safety and Hygiene
Orthokeratology has been used since 1962 and current designs are approved for overnight wear. The principal risk is microbial keratitis, and it is controlled by correct cleaning, never letting lenses touch water, and keeping every follow up appointment.
Ortho-K vs Daytime Contact Lenses
Ortho-K moves lens wear to overnight, leaving the day completely free, and slows myopia progression in children. Daytime soft lenses are simpler, cheaper to start and suit more prescriptions, but sit on the eye all day.

Does Ortho-K hurt?
The lens is felt on insertion, in the way a rigid lens always is, and that awareness fades within a few minutes as the eye settles and the eyelid stops registering the edge. Because the lens is worn with the eyes closed, most of the sensation people associate with rigid lenses never happens. Most wearers report they stop noticing the lenses within the first week.
How quickly does it work?
Most people see a large improvement after the very first night. Full correction typically settles over seven to fourteen nights, because the cornea adjusts progressively rather than all at once. Lower prescriptions stabilise fastest. Interim glasses can be used during that period if needed.
Is Ortho-K safe?
Orthokeratology has been in clinical use since 1962 and the lens designs used today are approved for overnight wear in both children and adults. The main risk is the same as for any contact lens worn overnight, which is infection, and it is managed the same way: correct handling, fresh solution, no water contact, and keeping follow up appointments so the corneal surface is checked regularly.

What happens if I stop wearing them?
Nothing permanent. The cornea gradually returns to its original shape and your vision returns to what it was before, generally within one to two weeks. Nothing is cut, removed or permanently altered, which is the central difference between Ortho-K and refractive surgery.
