Co-management means your optometrist handles the assessment before surgery and the care afterwards, while a surgeon performs the procedure. It keeps your follow up local and your advice independent of who profits from the operation.
Refractive surgery advice is worth more when it comes from someone who does not earn a fee from you having it. This practice does not perform surgery. What it provides is the assessment that establishes whether you are a genuine candidate, a referral to a surgeon when you are, and the follow up care afterwards.
That structure has a practical advantage as well as an ethical one. Post operative visits happen locally rather than requiring repeated trips to a surgical centre, and they happen with an optometrist who has your history and your pre operative measurements on file.
It also means the honest answer is available. A substantial proportion of people who want LASIK are not good candidates, whether because of corneal thickness, dry eye, prescription stability or age. Am I a LASIK Candidate?
LASIK candidacy depends on adequate corneal thickness, a prescription stable for at least a year, being over twenty one, healthy corneas and a well controlled ocular surface. Thin corneas and untreated dry eye are the most common disqualifiers.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Pre-operative assessment establishes candidacy and produces the measurements your surgeon needs: corneal topography, pachymetry, refraction, pupil size and a full ocular surface evaluation.
Post-Operative Care
Post operative care after refractive surgery covers healing checks, vision assessment and dry eye management across the weeks following surgery. Co-managed patients have these visits locally rather than at the surgical centre.
Cataract Surgery Co-Management
Cataract co-management covers assessment and monitoring, the lens implant discussion, surgeon referral, and post operative care locally. Dr Nguyen and Dr Sincennes both co-manage cataract surgery.
LASIK Alternatives
If LASIK is not suitable, the alternatives include Ortho-K overnight lenses, PRK for thinner corneas, implantable collamer lenses for high prescriptions, and modern contact lens options including specialty designs.
What LASIK Does Not Fix
LASIK corrects refractive error and nothing else. It does not prevent presbyopia, cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration or retinal disease, and it does not remove the need for regular eye examinations.
