Dilation and the Alternatives
Dilating drops widen the pupil so the retina and optic nerve can be examined fully. Optomap widefield imaging captures over 80 percent of the retina without drops and can often be used instead, avoiding hours of blurred vision.
Dilation is the reason many people put off eye exams, and that is a poor trade: several hours of light sensitivity avoided in exchange for skipping the part of the examination that detects retinal disease.
The purpose is straightforward. An undilated pupil is a small window, and examining the retinal periphery through it is like surveying a room through a keyhole. Widening the pupil opens the view.
Optomap changes the calculus considerably. It captures over 80 percent of the retina in a single ultra widefield image without drops, which for most routine examinations gives excellent coverage with no disruption to the rest of the day. Dilation remains the right choice in specific circumstances, and when it is, that reasoning gets explained.

Which is right for you

- Dilation is used when a fuller stereoscopic view is clinically warranted: suspected retinal tears, unexplained symptoms, or investigating a finding seen on imaging.
Questions and answers
How long does dilation last?
Typically four to six hours, sometimes longer with light coloured eyes. Near vision is blurred and bright light is uncomfortable throughout.
Can I drive after being dilated?
It is not advisable. Bring sunglasses and ideally arrange a lift.
Is Optomap as good?
For most routine purposes it provides excellent coverage and produces a permanent record for year on year comparison. Dilation gives a stereoscopic view that imaging does not, which is why it is still used where clinically warranted.
Do the drops hurt?
They sting briefly for a few seconds and then stop. The lasting effect is light sensitivity rather than discomfort.
