Same Day Glasses
Many prescriptions are finished in house on the day of your examination rather than being sent to an external laboratory. Complex prescriptions and specialist coatings are made to order and take longer.
Most optical practices send every job to an external laboratory, which is why a week to ten days is the standard wait. Finishing lenses on site changes that for a substantial proportion of prescriptions.
It matters most in specific situations: a broken pair with no spare, a child who cannot see the board, a visitor who has lost their glasses, or anyone who simply does not want to spend a fortnight squinting.
Not everything qualifies. High prescriptions, some progressive designs, specialist coatings and certain lens materials are made to order. The office tells you honestly at the point of ordering rather than promising same day and then calling to explain.
Questions and answers
Which prescriptions can be done same day?
Many single vision and common lens combinations. High prescriptions, some progressives, specialist coatings and certain materials are made to order.
How long do the others take?
Typically several days to a week depending on the lens and coatings. You get told the expected timeframe when you order.
Can I get sunglasses same day too?
Often, depending on the tint and whether polarisation is involved. Ask at the time.
Does same day mean lower quality?
No. It means the lenses are surfaced and fitted in house rather than shipped to a laboratory and back. The lens is the same lens.
