Vision plans and medical insurance are different

This confuses almost everybody and it is worth understanding before your visit.

A vision plan typically covers a routine annual examination and a contribution towards eyewear. Medical insurance typically covers eye disease, infection, injury and the monitoring of conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and dry eye.

That means a visit for new glasses and a visit for a red painful eye are billed differently, even though both happen in the same chair. Bring both cards and the office works out which applies.

When a routine visit becomes medical

Sometimes a routine examination finds something. That generates a medical component alongside the routine one, and it is explained to you at the time rather than appearing as a surprise on a statement.

Financing

Interest free in-office financing and payment plans are arranged directly with the office rather than through a third party lender. The point is that care is not delayed because of how a cost falls in a particular month.

FSA and HSA

Eye examinations, prescription eyewear and contact lenses are generally eligible expenses under flexible spending and health savings accounts. Check the specifics with your plan administrator.

Getting a figure before you commit

Nothing is ordered without your agreement and a clear figure. The office cannot quote reliably over the phone, because the cost depends on your plan, on what your eyes need and on what you choose, but you will have a number before anything is ordered.

Questions and answers

Do you take my insurance?

Call (480) 706-3937 with your plan details. VSP, EyeMed, Avesis, Medicare, TRICARE, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna and select Cigna plans are accepted along with other health plans, and coverage is verified before your visit.

Why do you need both my cards?

Because vision plans and medical insurance cover different things, and which applies depends on why you are being seen.

Does Medicare cover my eye exam?

Medicare covers medical eye care, including annual diabetic examinations and glaucoma screening for those at high risk. It does not generally cover routine refraction for glasses.

Can I pay over time?

Yes. Interest free in-office financing and payment plans are arranged directly with the office.
