Screen Use and Your Eyes

Screens do not damage your eyes. What they do is halve your blink rate and hold your focusing system at one distance for hours, and both of those are addressable without buying anything.

What screens actually do

Blink rate more than halves during concentrated screen work, and many of the blinks that remain are incomplete, failing to spread the tear film properly. That dries the ocular surface, which produces grittiness, redness and vision that blurs and clears as you blink.

Separately, the focusing system holds a fixed near position for hours without the natural distance breaks that other work provides. That produces the tired eyes and brow headaches that appear by mid afternoon and clear overnight.

On blue light, honestly

This practice does not claim that blue light filtering lenses protect your eyes from damage, because the evidence does not support that claim. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's position is that screen blue light does not cause eye damage, and the intensity involved is a small fraction of ordinary daylight.

What blue light lenses can legitimately offer is glare comfort, which some people genuinely notice. There is also a reasonable case around evening screen use and sleep, because late blue light exposure affects melatonin. That is a sleep argument rather than an eye health one.

What genuinely helps

  • The 20 20 20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It relaxes focus and prompts a full blink cycle.
  • A prescription optimised for your actual screen distance, which for anyone over forty in progressives is frequently the single biggest improvement available
  • Positioning the screen slightly below eye level, so the eyelid covers more of the eye surface and less evaporates
  • Deliberate full blinks during breaks
  • Treating any underlying dry eye, rather than treating the symptom with more drops

The neck pain nobody connects to their glasses

A progressive lens puts near correction at the bottom, designed for reading material held low. A screen sits higher and further away, so finding the right zone means tilting the head back. Do that for eight hours a day and the result is neck and shoulder pain that almost never gets attributed to eyewear.

An occupational lens designed around screen height removes the tilt entirely.

For children

The concern with children and screens is not damage, it is that sustained near work and reduced outdoor time are both associated with myopia progression. Around two hours a day outdoors is the habit with the strongest evidence behind it, and it costs nothing.
