After Your Appointment
New prescriptions take days to a couple of weeks to settle. If yours has not settled after two weeks, come back rather than putting up with it. Certain symptoms mean call the office immediately.
Adapting to a new prescription
Larger changes, first progressives and any change in astigmatism all take time to settle. Days for most people, up to two weeks for progressives.
Wear the new glasses consistently rather than switching back to the old pair. Every switch interrupts the adaptation your brain is trying to complete, and keeping the old pair to hand is the most common reason progressives fail.
If it has not settled after two weeks, come back. The 120 day redo guarantee exists precisely for glasses that were made correctly and still are not right.
If you were dilated
Vision is blurred at near and sensitive to light for four to six hours, sometimes longer with light coloured eyes. Sunglasses help considerably. Driving is not advisable until it has worn off.
New contact lens wearers
Build wearing time gradually, starting at four to six hours and adding an hour or two a day. Mild awareness, occasional watering and tiredness at the end of a long day are all normal in the first week.
Pain, significant redness, light sensitivity or blurred vision that does not clear after removing the lens are not normal. Take the lenses out and call.
When to come back
- At the interval you were given, which is set to match what was found rather than defaulting to a year for everyone
- Sooner if a new prescription has not settled within two weeks
- Sooner if a symptom you were seen for has not improved
- Sooner if anything new develops
Symptoms that mean call now
- Sudden loss of vision in either eye
- Significant eye pain, particularly if it seems out of proportion to how the eye looks
- A sudden shower of new floaters, new flashing lights, or a shadow moving across your vision
- A red painful eye, especially if you wear contact lenses
- Any chemical splash, after irrigating with clean water for at least fifteen minutes
