About Guadalupe
Guadalupe is a one square mile town founded by Yaqui families who came north from Sonora, and it has held onto a distinct cultural identity in a way almost nowhere else in the valley has. It is entirely surrounded by Tempe and Phoenix and remains its own municipality. Incorporated in 1975 to prevent annexation by Tempe, the town has resisted the development that surrounded it on all sides. Yaqui Easter ceremonies are held here annually and are closed to photography, which tells you something about how the community regards its own traditions.
