Our Story

Most optometry practices begin as a business decision. This one began as a family emergency.

After earning a degree in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota and a Doctor of Optometry from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Dr Mark Page came to Phoenix to begin practising.

Then his father developed a hole in his right eye and lost the vision in it.

The office Dr Page was working in at the time was not equipped with the technology needed to properly monitor his father's remaining good eye. Faced with that, his father said something that decided the next thirty years. He said he would rather see his son.

With his father's backing, Dr Page opened Arizona's Vision Eye Care Center in Ahwatukee in 1994.

That origin explains things about this practice that would otherwise look like inefficiency.

It explains why there is imaging here that most optical shops do not carry, and why retinal imaging is part of a standard examination rather than an upsell. It explains why appointments are scheduled two patients per hour rather than four or five, which halves the throughput and doubles the time available to actually look at someone's eyes.

The founding question was never how quickly a prescription could be written. It was what a proper look at the back of the eye would have found in time.

Since 1994 the practice has stayed in Ahwatukee, at 15215 S 48th St Ste 180, just off Interstate 10 between Ray Road and Chandler Boulevard. The tagline has stayed the same too: protecting your precious eyesight since 1994.

Families who came in as children now bring their own children. Some patients have been coming since the year the doors opened. A number travel from well outside the valley, and a few from other states, for the specialty contact lens work.

The Invisalens overnight lens programme has run here since long before overnight correction was widely known. Specialty contact lens fitting for keratoconus and irregular corneas became a defining part of the practice. Dr Hao Nguyen and Dr Callie Sincennes joined, bringing ocular disease management, low vision care and surgical co-management.

Dr Page wrote a book for parents, The Smart Parents Guide: How To Help Your Child See a Better Life, and has spoken about children's vision on ABC 15, Fox 10, Channel 7 with Pat McMahon and ABC 9 Morning Blend in Tucson, among others.

Good quality eye care with old fashioned service is how the practice describes what it does. In Dr Page's own words, the aim is to create a hometown, family feeling with old fashioned service, while also delivering a leading edge eye care experience.

Both halves of that sentence matter, and the practice was built because one of them was missing somewhere else.
